Please be aware, that accepting donations through any of the payment gateways are considered taxable income; in the United States unless you are a 501(c) organization. The only way around this is to process payments (paper checks or money orders) manually. Also, if you receive more than $500 in any single year through a payment gateway (in the US) a 1099 will be sent to the IRS.
You mentioned sandbox mode. Is all of this happening in sandbox mode? Have you actually seen this issue in live mode? Because sandbox mode is not intended to be a simulation.

Option 1: Payment Before Registration
Users select and pay for a membership level on the “Join Us” or Landing page.

Each subscription represents a binding legal contract between the subscriber and the payment processor. Your site is only a beneficiary of the contract, and not an actual party. The contract can only be cancelled by either the subscriber or the payment processor..
