You might have “bigger problems” than you think. Please contact your hosting provider to determine why you can’t access your site anymore.
But I am getting an error message; unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal erroer, so the php change was reverted

That sounds like a hard coded “category template” file, that is part of your theme.

You may end up having to “roll up your sleeves,” and do some PHP coding of your theme’s category template file.Have you personally tried resetting YOUR own password?
