Moderator>strong>TURN ON THE SWPM DEBUG LOGS
Is this error for a new member, created after you fixed the last issue? Or is it for a member who joined previously?
Please post debug log entries, if available.
The Assurer
ModeratorDo you have the debug logs turned on?
At first glance, it looks like the site is not communication with the MySQL server. Did you recently relocate or move your site between hosting providers or servers? You might have to contact your (current) hosting provider.

Moderator… would it work if I ask them to use the cancellation button (https://simple-membership-plugin.com/show-active-subscriptions-and-providing-a-cancellation-option/) to cancel their monthly before switching to an annual membership?
It is irrelevant whether the existing subscription agreement is terminated before or after the upgrade to the new level.

ModeratorHmmm, it took more than 10 seconds, before erroring out. Do you have any idea where in the world that transaction came from? Remember, in March, the Rubymar cut a major internet cable as it was sinking into the Red Sea. That particular cable carried most of the Internet traffic between Europe and Asia.
The Assurer
ModeratorThat is why we include emails with registration; because the issue also affects effective use of the “Thank You page.”
Out of curiosity, where is the server itself hosted, and where are your members from?
The Assurer
ModeratorWhen you upgrade from one level to the next, the new level take effect, when the payment is processed by SWPM; and the new membership level replaces the old one.
HOWEVER, on the payment processing side (PayPal, et al), the older subscription will “keep going” in concurrence with the new one. In the worst case, you might have a case where multiple recurring subscription payments occur; one for each membership level.
If you intend to allow people to upgrade, set the memberships using a “Buy Now” button for a period of 1 year. That way, the memberships have a chance to “die” on their own accord.
The Assurer
ModeratorState changes of membership status and levels take place in several places within SWPM, as inline table changes. There is no support for callbacks that will catch such changes in real time.

ModeratorThere is either a delay with PayPal or something in the latest update that has broken something.
We have also noticed that this does not always happen, we had a user update their account yesterday and it worked automatically.
I forgot what the exact percentage is, but depending upon factors such as network traffic and PayPal’s processing load; there is a 30-ish percent chance that control will return to the site, before the IPN is sent and processed.
In the cases where processing is successful; are all of the expected debug messages posted?
And when there are issues, does it eventually resolve itself on its own, after a period of time? …like in a few minutes?

ModeratorPlease turn on the debug logs, and try your tests again.
You also seem to be confusing WordPress User terminology with SWPM Member terminology. WP Users and SWPM Members use different registration and login processes; unless they are configured to sync with each other.

ModeratorThe plugin is browser agnostic. Please provide more specific answers to each of the following questions:
- Are you using any page caching plugins on your site?
- Have you tried using a different computer?
- Have you tried removing Firefox and reinstalling it, WITHOUT ANY EXTENSIONS, and USING THE DEFAULT SBROWSER SETTINGS?
- Is the problem only specific to just one member?
The Assurer
ModeratorSWPM is agnostic, as to whether you are using Firefox, Edge, or Chrome. You didn’t mention if the issue is limited to just YOUR Firefox browser, or everybody’s Firefox browser.
Because the issue only occurs on Firefox and not Chrome, it is most likely a browser settings issue.
- Have you tried a different computer?
- Disabling cookie and tracking protection?
- Disabling extensions?
Finally, you can always try installing a fresh copy of Firefox onto an instance of Windows Sandbox.
