Yes, I had followed those instructions. It seems that as soon as I logged out and logged back in, everything worked fine and I no longer needed to log into the protected area separately. So, just in case my case is not isolated, you may want to add a fourth step of log out and log back in – or not 🙂

Ah, I realize now that even though I was already logged in as the admin, I still have to log in on the membership login page to gain access to the protected content. I’ve done that and it works great.
