Permission to access log file denied

When I try to login to WordPress, I get a series of error messages following the last SMP update.

The issue seems to be to do with permissions on /simple-membership/log-auth-616445070ea6d.txt. This file exists and I can read it on the server. The content looks OK. I tried changing the permissions to something higher but any change was rejected. Current permissions are 0644.

Any thoughts about what is happening here?

Turns out this is not an issue with the plugin at all. THe issue is with the hosting.
