Hi! I’m having a couple major issues related to the membership plugin. The first is my users are unable to access any of the protected content on my site as the membership plugin as created a login loop wherein any time they try to access protected pages the website routes them back to the login page despite the user already being logged in. I have tried lifting the protection on these pages but they still route users back to the login screen despite having “No, do not protect this content” selected.

The second issue I discovered while trying to trouble shoot the first issue. After disabling all other plugins and still experiencing the same login loop I tried to change the theme to test the theme compatibility. The theme (Mad Hat) will not change on my website despite having an entirely different theme activated on the back end.

So, before completely deleting the theme we currently have running I tested the issue in our sandbox site. I deleted the Mad Hat theme and activated Twenty Seventeen successfully but am still experiencing the same login loop where I’ll try access a protected page, it will route me to the the screen saying I need to login. If I click the login link it will direct me to my membership profile information.

Please let me know what I need to do to correct this issue. Thank you!

Hi, have you tried to carry out a live test and at the same time disabling the Sandbox option?

Yes, the plugin sandbox testing option was never enabled. All the issues and testing we have had have been live tests.

Okay lets try something different. Disable and delete the plugin. Then check to see if login in via WordPress admin also creates the login loop. What entries do you have in your .htaccess file?

Once you have carried out the above then install a fresh copy of the plugin. Then carry out another test. Report back.

    Thank you

We have been using this plugin for some months without any issues so we already have a listing of close to 175 members. Can you give me some instruction on the best way to go about deleting the plugin (which I assume will wipe all its data) while still being able to reinstate all the users later?

We have each member listed as a WordPress contributor and we also use the membership plugin in associating with the Business Directory plugin so I will need to relink all those items.

Okay before we do the above can you let me know if you updated your theme lately? The reason why I am asking is because of the following comment.

After disabling all other plugins and still experiencing the same login loop I tried to change the theme to test the theme compatibility. The theme (Mad Hat) will not change on my website despite having an entirely different theme activated on the back end.

The above is telling me that the issue could be related to your theme. Is your theme up to date? Or did your host make any changes to your server lately?

In regards to your testing sandbox site. Does it have exactly the same plugins and configuration as your none working site?

The host hasn’t made any changes to the server and the theme is up to date. We are running the current version (MadHat 1.0.0.3) and that update was released on Jan 9th of this year.

The sandbox site does have the same plugins and configuration of all those plugins are the same. The only thing that is notably different are the menu items. The sandbox site was used to test plugins and themes so once it came down to actually designing the content layout, that was all done on the live site.

Now for some reason I was able to change the theme on the Sandbox site after I deleted the theme we tested and used for the live site (MadHat). I activated WordPress theme Twenty Seventeen on the sandbox site successfully. However I’m still experiencing the login loop on the sandbox site as well.

Thank you for providing more information. The plugin developers will investigate further your issue.

    Kind regards

You do not lose any data if you deactivate or delete the plugin. It is safe to temporarily deactivate this plugin then test the user’s login via WordPress’s admin login interface to see if the login works correctly.

There would have to be some kind of a customization or other conflict on this site that is making the plugin behave this way. Nothing has changed in this plugin that would make your site behave the way you explained. So the key is to figure out where the conflict is coming from.

Hi! Since the last time I was on this forum I have been doing some troubleshooting – Initially the deactivate/delete appeared the fix the issue as I was able to login and access the protected materials once. However, shortly afterward I received communications from my users that the site was still prompting them to login again when they tried to access protected content. And I had the same issue when I tested it myself. What do I need to do at this point?

Seems like a caching issue on this site. Is your hosting provider using caching on their end? Are you using any caching plugin?

    Hi,

I am having this exact problem.

My host (Dreamhost) has Varnish server-side cache, but following a support request they have exempted all the membership and login pages from Varnish cache. I do not have any caching plugins active on my site.

However, the problem remains. Was there any further progress on this? I have over 250 members on the site, and this is becoming a real issue.

    Many thanks.

The plugin is working fine, I have verified it myself just now. This will be a caching related issue. I can’t confirm what your hosting provider has done, but you can test this plugin on a site where no caching is used on the server and you won’t see this issue.

We support the following two popular WordPress caching plugins (if you want to use a caching plugin):

    https://simple-membership-plugin.com/wp-super-cache-compatibility-simple-membership/

    https://simple-membership-plugin.com/w3-total-cache-compatibility-simple-membership/

If your hosting provider has an option where they don’t serve cached page if a cookie is present, then we can devise a solution for that.
