critical error on this website message when editing user profile

I am trying to edit a member email address and when clicking save I get a message that says:

There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.

No email is being sent and the address is not being updated

Please turn on the debug logs. And then download and install a fresh copy of the plugin. All of your existing data is preserved. DO NOT USE the copy that you previously installed; in case that download was corrupted.
