I’m going with the following:

A custom home page using partial content blocking (as you described). Then I’m using a plugin called “Redirect to login if not logged in” so that not logedin users will be sent to login and all loggedin users will get a nice looking homepage to help them navigate.

Exactly the elegant solution I was hoping for.
