If your site is well ranked in google with a topic spammers love, reCAPTCHA makes not much difference.
There are services like 2captcha.com, they pay real people to solve captchas and even providing an API to their spamming customers. I would be extremely interested in a better solution than reCAPTCHA and the country blocking I’m doing right now.btw. an alternative more elaborate hack if you have a vps / root access to the server would be fail2ban, a paid maxmind GeoIP2 subscription for a more uptodate database and then an countryblock build with this. not really trivial and more expensive.
Had the same problem. Also with deactivated wp user registration.
the only workaround I found was cleantalk with country blocking. the site is just German and the spam came from China, Russia, Belarus mainly – this helped a lot … unfortunate I have another site where I’m planning to use simple membership -at the moment it is on Patreon and I have paying subscribers from these countries ….It would really help to have an flow like
fill the register form – pay with PayPal/stripe and after receiving the payment the “real account” will be generated.when I activate / configure it the front page will connect to the google server.
Is there the possility to do this after the user has optin with a cookie banner / do not connect to google if the user denys?
This is super important otherwise it is not really lega-safe to use simple membership with recaptcha in germany.
