my setup allows users to automatically create a membership when they register. They do then get an email with a confirmation link. Everything works as expected.
I just want to know: Does the confirmation link expire after a certain time, or is it valid forever?
It “expires” the first time anyone uses it.
That’s what I thought. This might become an issue with GDPR. User’s can ask us to delete all of their data we stored. If someone registers, but never confirm the emailed link, the data sent with the registration form sit somewhere and we can’t delete. Very rare situation to expect, but in case it happens it might become expensive. It makes sense to add a function to set a time/date when the confirmation link will expire, if it has not been klicked.
You will always have some left-over/incomplete/unconfirmed user profiles that got abandoned. You can go to the members menu of the plugin and identify them by looking at the “username” column. If there is no username and the profile was created like a month ago then that means it is likely abandoned. Every couple of months, you can have a look for those and delete those profiles out. Deleting the profile will clean out any data related to those profiles.
And you can also state in your T&C that uncompleted registrations will be “routinely deleted” every “N” weeks or months.
