    Is there a way of allowing a member to edit or change their username within the plugin?
    I have tried to enable an edit field on the “Edit Profile” form, but I cannot get this to work.

    If you are comfortable getting into the back end, it can be administratively changed in the WP Database using myPHP through your webhost.

    As far a I know usernames cannot be changed from within Simple Membership.

    That is correct. The SWPM user names are actually the WordPress user names. Since WP does not permit user editable name changes, so goes SWPM.
