Trouble with Registration

I’ve had my clients create their membership accounts using a form that I made with the form builder addon for our member directory addon. There is only one membership level. The form field is set to “free”, which is the only level.

But when members sign up, they are not assigned a membership level. The “membership level” field in the member list in admin is empty. When I look at the details of their account in admin, the membership level is there and it reads “free”.

I have default account status set to “pending” but these new users went strait to “active” in admin (no users listed in “pending”).

Even though they are “active” members, they do not have access to member content on the site and they are not added to the member directory.

Does account email activation need to be turned off for them to be “pending” members until approved?
