Having added some security software to my site I discover the normal WP login page is constantly being “tested” by bots. Should I disable this login page somehow, or might that cause a problem such as not being able to log in as admin if there is a problem?

I don’t recommend you to disable the login page. Instead why don’t you install a plugin that hides the login page or add a two factor authentication plugin like the ones below.
