protection for downloadable files

I’m setting up a website for an organization of artists using Simple Membership and the Partial Protecton addon, with four levels of free membership. A primary purpose of the website will be for members to download various .pdf files. That works, but the files themselves aren’t secure; someone who knows how to find them can access them with wget.

What’s a good way to protect access to downloadable files, and not just access to their links within pages? There are several download monitors; are any of them are known to work well with Simple Membership?
