    Hello,

We had an instance where the paypal payment was confirmed via paypal and showed as completed/subscribed on SWPM but the membership account was not created. We manually created their membership account and matched the Subscriber ID under payments with the Subscriber ID under the member user account. Will this connect it to Paypal so that if the Paypal subscription is not paid, it will automatically cancel the account with SWPM?

    Thanks!

Please turn on the debug logs. Without debug logs, we are only guessing. Also, there is no mechanism to link a manually created membership to a PayPal subscription.

You should also review the PayPal subscription button setup documentation, and ensure that you have enabled the IPN.

I’ve enabled debugging. I will get the logs if/when this occurs again. I’m also checking IPN. It should be enabled but I’m double checking.

Just to confirm, since I’ve manually created memberships for these few customers where paypal shows transaction but no membership created by SWPM, does that mean I have to manually check Paypal to confirm their account is in good standing.

Yes. When a PayPal subscription is successfully paid for, an IPN message is sent to SWPM; that not only automagically creates the membership account, but also links it to the PayPal subscription. Also, whenever an IPN message is processed, it should register in the debug logs. No IPN message, no automagic account creation.

@Alex, For your PayPal subscription button, are you using the PayPal button option that uses the new API?

    Or the standard/legacy one?

If you are having issues with the PayPal IPN feature on your site, consider using the new PayPal API button option which doesn’t rely on IPN. Instead it uses webhooks which tends to be more reliable and works better on most sites.

If you manually enter the subscriber ID in the profile and then activate the IPN, it should theoretically connect and work. However, it’s not advisable to rely on this method. Instead, enable the debug logging feature as suggested by @wzp, and perform the following payment tests to ensure everything is set up correctly on your site:

IPN is confirmed to be active on PayPal. The button we are using is the PayPal Subscription (New API). We also think there may have been some cache issues and have asked WP Engine to bypass cache per your cache documentation.

Debugging has been enabled and I’ll let it run through the week. Thanks!
