I’m using WP membership plugin for the registration and payment of a professional society. The members register as simple members (usually with their professional email) and can then either pay by bank transfer (remaining simple members) or by paypal online payment (change of membership level). However, when a member pays through a paypal account having a different email address than the one he registered with, the system creates a new member instead of upgrading the actual account. If both emails are identical, the problem doesn’t arise. How can I merge now the two accounts without losing trace of the transaction? How can I avoid the problem next time?

How can I avoid the problem next time?

By requiring the member to first login with an existing account; before allowing them to renew or upgrade.

There is no way to “merge” accounts. Decide which account to keep and then deactivate the other one.

Actually the person was logged in when he clicked on the payment button. I protected the payment page so it can be viewed only by logged members.

The plugin uses the existing account if the member is logged-in. It is likely something else is going wrong on
this site and needs an in-depth investigation. Can you please enable the debug logging option then do a test transaction for that scenario so we can see what it is doing?
