Loss of Custom Field Data when changing member level

The bulk of my members join by mail. I then provide these mail in members a link with a registration form. The registration form has custom fields with a temporary membership level. When the registration comes in. I have to change the membership level to the correct level. When I change the membership level. It removes the check boxes completely and the two custom fields. One is a Date Box and the other a text box. These boxes are stripped clean but the fields remain. Now if I modify any field including the custom fields without touching the membership level. Everything stays when I save the changes. Why does the change in Membership Level create these issues?

Yes. I paid for the Form Builder On. Had no issues programming the fields. Works rather well too.
