As mbrsolution points out, we don’t know exactly what you are looking for, but one way to indicate to the user whether they are logged in or not is to use this shortcode in a “text” sidebar widget:

    [swpm_login_form]

It shows the login form when not logged in AND it shows some member info when you are logged in.

For my taste, it showed too much info. I edited the PHP file that drives it to only show the user’s name and the logout link. I also made the name a link to the profile page. The file I edited is:
    /wp-content/plugins/simple-membership/views/loggedin.php

Some of my users are confused about when they need to log in. It would be helpful to have an indication of whether the user was logged in to Simple Membership or not.

I like the sidebar widget idea. I would be great to have a shortcode that just generates a short text: “Logged in as username>.” if logged in, or “Click here to login.” if not logged in, with the ability to define a hyper link for the second text.

@glforte, do your members log into your website using Simple Membership plugin and or are they also allowed to log in as WordPress Users using yoursite.com/wp-admin or yoursite.com/wp-login?

    In regards to your question.

Some of my users are confused about when they need to log in.

When ever they land in a page or post that is protected they will see a message displayed letting them know they need to log in or become a member to view the content.

In regards to your next comment.

It would be helpful to have an indication of whether the user was logged in to Simple Membership or not.

As @TroyWolf mentioned above a sidebar widget will let them know if they are currently logged in or not.

Please view the following URL to see some of the different screens that are displayed when a member is logged in , not logged in and logged out successful etc.
