How to renew membership with a fixed expiration date

I created a single membership button via the instructions (https://simple-membership-plugin.com/creating-a-paypal-button-for-your-membership-payment) with an expiration of July 1, 2017. (I like the button customizing that is possible with the PayPal buttons).

All memberships, regardless of when they join expire on this date.
We do not want to have recurring payments – we want the members to renew manually.

My question is: In order for members to renew for the next year, do I need to create a brand new Membership Level button with an expiration date July 1, 2018?

Or is there another way to handle these renewals?

I see your recommendation for renewal is to use the payment button shortcodes. If I use the shortcodes (and not the PayPal buttons) for the initial membership button, I still do not understand how to deal with this fixed expiration date issue when it comes time for members to sign up again. Hi, all you have to do is following the instructions you shared above to create a renewal button. The plugin and PayPal will workout the rest for you automatically.

The plugin will work out the necessary steps for you.

I would also recommend that you create a PayPal button using the plugins integrated system via WP Membership -> Payments -> Create New Button and select PayPal Buy Now button.

The plugin developers have stated that setting up the buy now button in this manner allows the plugin to have more control over the buttons.

I’m ok on how to create the renewal button and I will use the plugin integrated system for creating all the buy now buttons, no problem.

But I’m still not clear on the following:
I have a membership called “Gold Membership” and it is set to a fixed expiration of June 30, 2017. When a member renews, how does the system know what the NEW expiration date is?

If I edit the Gold Membership Level in May of next year and change the expiration date to June 30, 2018, then everyone who is already paid will get their subscription extended a year even though they haven’t paid, right?

So… at some point, I need to define the NEW membership expiration date and I’m not sure where/how to do it without impacting members who haven’t renewed.

It seems to me that if I don’t change the expiration date, then every member – paid or not – will lose access on June 30, 2017.

Hi, if you added a fixed date to the membership level then yes create a new membership level with the new expiration period. However if you only selected Expire After 1 week, 1 month etc then you don’t have to do anything and you can use the same shortcode you used previously as stated in the instructions above.
