How can I customize the Member Directory listings?

The page that displays all the members doesn’t suit our needs and I want to fully customize this page and the way the listings display. On the tutorial page, the “Template 2” mentioned actually looks pretty good and could be a great starting point for me, but when I use the shortcode to show template 2, it doesn’t change – it still shows the default style/data.

1. How do I get “template 2” to work? Are there other pre-designed templates available?
2. How can I create a custom template?
3. Can I show some custom fields data in the directory listings?

Oh also, on the member directory page, the entries are not lining up evenly. Here is the link for a visual https://dascdoulas.org/all-members/

but the first 2 rows display 3 columns and then after that it’s messed up showing 1 per row every other row.
