Edit profile form – how to remove the profile image

The webiste I run uses the Members Directory and the edit profile form to allow members to update their profiles after registering.

A function that appears to be missing is one allowing members to delete their profile photo. It is easy enough to update it, but you cannot simply delete it and leave this field empty.

Any suggestions how this might be achieved?

Note, these members do not have access to the control panel and the image gallery.
