    Doing bulk import

The current data for each member DOES NOT include a username (not used in current website)

I set the temporary password and I check send the members a registration complete message.

If I do the import with only email and names (no username) the member gets imported with Pending status

However the email the user gets does not show the username (oviously since it is blank)

That user cannot log in with their email (which is not shown as a login option – but does work with established accounts.

QUESTION Is there a way to do bulk import without usernames and have the new members get an email that will allow them to log in with their email and password. AND to show the email as well as the temporary password for logging in?

IF not, is there a way to change usernames once a member is registered and active?

Since you are importing from a CSV file; how about first loading the CSV file into Excel, assigning a username based on the email address, and then resaving the CSV file?

Yes that would work HOWEVER our users do not want to use their email as their username AND they want to set their own username.

Should be a way to do this because if our members pay first to register, they are provided a link to finish their profile and enter their desired user name.

AND, there does not seem to be anyway to change user names one they are set.

Unfortunately, there is just no way to change a username, once it has been assigned:

Since you are importing members, presumably from another system; perhaps you can give the existing members the opportunity to choose their new username. And if they do not do so in a timely manner; their new username will be some kind of permanent-default.

Actually I stumbled on to a solution. You may want to document this in documentation.

To Import users WITHOUT a username and have them complete their registration including their username do this:

    1. If you have not enabled Free Memberships, do that and set the membership level to that you want the import to match. This is temporary until all imported persons have completed their registrations. If necessary, you can change the membership level after they complete their registrations.
    2. Fill in the spread sheet and leave Username BLANK
    3. Set the membership level the SAME as the Free Membership
    4. Put some text in the reg_code field This can be anything, does not have to unique for each user but best if it is. I just use the persons last name
    5. Import the spreadsheet but DO NOT check the Send Registration Complete Email
    6. AFTER the imports, go to WP Membership Settings Tools
    SELECT For All Incomplete Registrations
Check Send Registration Reminder Email Too
    Click Submit
Each member will get an email with the link to complete. The Code will be what you entered in the reg_code field.

After all imported members have completed their registrations, Reset the Free Membership as it was before you started. (Unchecked or checked with the appropriate membership level.

Hope this helps some others in the future.
