ParticipantI am using v.3.1.2
All of my pages are in one of two categories: free; or, premium.
1. I have applied General Protection to these two categories. I see that all the pages do indeed have access granted to all the membership levels
2. When I then try to select membership level Free, in order to not allow access to premium, the system doesn’t allow any more changes.
So, EVERYTHING is now protected, but ALL users, both those who have paid and those who only elected for Free, can see the whole site.
I am logged in as Administrator
Please help,

ModeratorHi did you also protect the pages?
November 12, 2015 at 12:45 pm #3928fletj
ParticipantYes, all the “free” and “premium” pages are protected. That was carried out correctly under step 1 above.
The problem is that, when I tried to go through the different membership levels to carry out the second part of the operation (say, to dissallow “free” when the page is for “premium”, the process doesn’t work. When I go into the individual page, I deselect “free” but, once re-saved, the checkbox goes back to what it was.
I hope I’ve explained myself properly. Here is picture.

ModeratorHi can you enable Debug Mode and then carry out another test? Afterwards can you check the log file. Can you also check the following documentation.
Thank you

ParticipantCould you tell me how to enable Debug Mode, and how to use it. Thanks
November 12, 2015 at 10:45 pm #3943mbrsolution
ModeratorCertainly 🙂
Go to WP Membership -> Settings -> General Settings and towards the end you will see the following Test & Debug Settings. Check the Enable Debug mode option. Once another action has been carried out by the plugin simply click on View debug log file by clicking here.

ParticipantOK, this will have to wait till morning now (here in England). Since switching on Simple Membership at 0900 today, I have had over 300 members sign-up for a mixture of “Free” and “Paid buttons. The site has got slower and slower throughout the day, and now, I have just managed to switch Debug Mode on, but cannot do much more. Safari says Can’t open the Page.
I’ll have to wait till morning when America is asleep and hope that things perk up a bit. I’m assuming it is the mass of people trying to join up, and waiting for PayPal to respond, and people then getting into Login, Logout loop. Has this happened with anyone else?
Still, in the morning I will continue and get back to you. I’ll do the rest of what you suggest.

ModeratorThank you for the information. I would also check to make sure you have plenty of Memory allocated to your WordPress website.
If you are getting many members signing up, you will have to make sure your server can cope as well. What kind of server is your website hosted in?

ParticipantI am on Bluehost Pro. So it is still a shared server, but supposedly is only allowed to have 20% of what their basic package offers. I do have a dedicated IP if that is relevent.
I’ll get in touch with them tomorrow to see how much memory is allocated to WordPress.

ParticipantRegarding the speed, everything now seems to be back to normal, so I won’t be contacting my host just at the moment.
I turned on Debug Mode, and everything is marked SUCCESS. This includes PayPal transactions and MailChimp integration.
But there is no mention in the Debug Log about Category Protection adjustments.
I have carefully gone through your document about Categroy Protection, and carried the procedure and still no luck.
What can I do now to help sort this out? Is there any way I can give you access to the Admin side of my site? Would that help?
Thanks so much for your patience,

KeymasterSomething strange is going on this site. What happens if you undo all the category protection then just test the protection of a single page? Does the protection of a single page working on your site?
Did you deactivate all other plugins to make sure you don’t have any plugin conflict?

ParticipantIt suddenly occurred to me (at 4 o’clock this morning) that I hadn’t fully understood the workings of the Category Protection. What I had done was, in General Protection, ticked ALL the categories (I have 18), when I only needed to tick the two for Free pages and for Premium pages. Then going on to the membership levels to choose who gets access to which categories.
So now all is working on the page protection front.
Sorry to have had you looking at this. I do class myself as reasonably intelligent, yet still didn’t follow the thinking behind Category Protection. But I don’t know how else you could word it in the Documents.
So, this can now be closed. I have a couple of other queries but I’ll start new threads for those.
A great plug-in,
