Can more than one member share the same e-mail?

I am trying to use Simple Membership to manage the members of our non-profit organization through our website.

In using the bulk importer to import existing members, I’ve run into an issue. In some cases, we have spousal members who share the same email. The importer won’t allow me to import more than one person with the same email address, and it won’t allow me to import someone without an email address. Is there a way to override that so that more than one member can use the same email address?
