Hi
I have followed the bulk import instructions very carefully, downloaded the template and created an Excel .csv file with a selection of members to test this out, but when I try to import I get an error that says the user_name column is not present, but it is.
Any ideas?
Thanks

If you import the template file “as-is,” without ANY editing or modifications, do you still receive an error?

No – this imports correctly

February 2, 2019 at 3:48 pm #17254Hi again
I think I found the problem. I had saved my file as a CSV UTF-8 format file. When I saved it as a ‘plain’ CSV file and tried again, I didn’t get the error.
However it did not upload all 18 records – it took three goes to get all of them in, which is not really satisfactory, as eventually I will have a much larger number to import.
Any ideas on that issue?February 3, 2019 at 3:11 am #17255Load both the example CSV file and your version into Notepad. Anything “different” between them; besides the number of entries?
February 3, 2019 at 9:55 am #17256Hi – thanks for getting back
I’ve pasted them into Notepad and can’t see any obvious differences.

I meant directly open each file with Notepad. We’re trying to see if there’s “something wrong” with the file format. Copy/Paste doesn’t cut it, because the clipboard might aler the information.

Both look the same in Notepad.
I’ve encountered anther problem with the user_name field.
I made all the usernames in my .csv upload file a concatenation of firstname, an underscore and lastname, ie john_doe, and these imported without any error messages.
However, if I add a member in the member list dashboard, I get an error message if I include an underscore in the username.
This makes no sense to me!February 4, 2019 at 4:13 am #17259However, if I add a member in the member list dashboard, I get an error message if I include an underscore in the username.
This makes no sense to me!The addon bypasses the checks WordPress uses for username creation. When you use the dashboard; WordPress enforces the invalid character checks.
Can you provide a Dropbox or Google Drive link to a copy of the file you are trying to import?

Sorry – I can’t provide the file because of EU GDPR constraints. It contains private personal information.
I didn’t fully understand your comment about the underscore in the username. It seemed to be the wrong way round from what I am experiencing. So I’ve just looked at this again. (This time I used Safari instead of Windows 10 Edge just in case it is a browser problem.)
When I create a new User in the standard WP User dashboard area, an underscore is permitted in the username.
When I create a new Member in the Simple Membership plugin members area an underscore is not permitted, but when I use the Bulk Import add-on to import usernames with underscores into the members list, these usernames are accepted.
This is what I find to be very strange and inconsistent! Using underscores is very common. It surely must be a trivial matter to configure the plugin to accept them!
Thanks again
