For “Active” members, when their membership period runs out, I presume their Account Status is automatically changed to “Expired”. Are there any other circumstances when this occurs?

And what causes a member’s Account Status to change to “Inactive”.

I suppose what I am asking is: what is the difference between “Expired” and “Inactive”?

    Many thanks,
    JohnF

    Further to this:

I started the site on November 11 2015, so will expect those members who registered 12 months ago to expire on November 10 2016. Yet I notice that quite a number have already expired, including those who joined up to November 15 2015.

I think it is because those that purchased memberships I chose an expiry date of 1 Year, whereas others I gave a complementary membership I chose an expiry date of 12 Months. So “12 months” doesn’t equal “1 Year”, but is about 7 or 8 days shorter.

    Just an observation,
    JohnF

Hi, looking at the logic behind the Expired and Inactive account. An expired account is one that has expired because of the time period set out from the beginning. The Inactive account is one that is not currently active and perhaps the admin changed the account from active to inactive for various reasons.

I have another problem that has arisen today, connected with this.

A member whose regisration has just expired (Account Status = Expired) has just tried to logged in. They arrived at the membership-renew page OK, but it has the following message:

You need to be logged in to see the rest of this page
Your account has expired. Please renew your account go gain access to this content.

Clicking on the renew link just goes round in circles.

I have ticked the relevent option in the Advanced Settings to Enable Expired Account Login.

    Cheers,
    JohnF

Hi, did you follow these instructions when setting up the renewal page?

Sorry, had to go out, and it’s now bedtime. I’ll do some more testing tomorrow and get back to you.

    Hi,

I had checked that documentation, but I went through it again. Everything was in order.

As I went through I ticked and unticked (or the other way round) all the options just to be sure, but I still had the problem with expired members.

It occurred to me: my Join Us page and my Renew page are quite detailed, so I had decided to split them up into other pages, with links from the Renew page. I have now reverted to having all the information on the one Renew page, and all now seems to be working as intended. Perhaps it was this that SM didn’t like.

I have set up a test borrower with a 7 day expiry. I will let it expire naturally and then check what happens when I sign in. But hopefully it was just a gremlin and all is now sorted.

Many thanks for a wonderful plugin: it is working magnificently with the 13,000 members that I now have.

    Cheers,
    JohnF

I am happy to hear. And hopefully you will have good news at the end of the 7 day account trial test.

    UPDATE:

My test member expired. SM referred me to the renewals page. I was able to renew as designed. So all is well.

I think I misinterpreted your sentence in Step 2 of “Creating Membership Renewal Button” where it says “They won’t be able to view any protected or restricted content”. Because my renewal page was getting quite detailed with quite a few membership levels for the users to choose from, I had divided it up into further pages with just links on the renewals page. But when the user clicked on the link SM, of course, kept telling them that their membership had expired.

So, there can only be one renewals page, as set in the Advanced Settings. SM won’t allow them to click further into the site, even to non-protected pages.

Many thanks. This case is now SOLVED

    Cheers,
    JohnF
