The emails being sent out from Simple Membership Plugin are inconsistent in their formatting and aren’t always filling in the merge tags correctly. But it depends on the message.

The email sent by Email Settings (Registration Complete) fills in the merge tags correctly, but does not format with line breaks. It shows up all as one big paragraph.

The admin email for Email Settings (Registration Complete) handles merge tags correctly and formats the text correctly with line breaks.

The email sent from Email Settings (Bulk Account Activate Notification) fails to fill in the merge tags and ignores line breaks displaying all text as one paragraph.

When I use the Send Direct Email, everything appears to work correctly.

I do not have the send as HTML email selected, but it does appear that the emails being sent to the user are HTML while the email being sent to the admin is plain text.

Is there some way to mitigate these inconsistencies? Thank you.

Some merge tags may not work in certain emails because the necessary data isn’t available in that context. This is expected behavior. If you let me know which specific email is missing which merge tag, I can double-check it and update our documentation accordingly for better clarity:

The formatting issues might be coming from an external source (different filtering is being applied by another plugin or theme to the outgoing emails).

    Do the following test:

Ah. I see it’s written directly on the page that the bulk emailer doesn’t use merge tags.(emphasis added):
Email Settings (Bulk Account Activate Notification)
This email will be sent to your members when you use the bulk account activate and notify action. You cannot use email merge tags in this email. You can only use generic text.

I missed that bit of information, but that answers that question. Might be good to emphasize that point in the help text since it’s different than all of the others on that page.

As for the formatting issue, I shut everything off except the Simple Membership plugin, the related premium Simple Membership plugins, and SMTP2GO (my email routing/sending method). The formatting issue continues in the same way.

There shouldn’t be anything happening in my site to alter the emails being created; SMTP2GO doesn’t alter emails to my knowledge, just routes them to be sent. I can’t turn that plugin off because it’s what I am using the actually send the emails.

Thank you for any additional information you can provide. If you need the actual emails, I export them fully intact (with headers, etc.) and share them if need be. Happy to do any additional troubleshooting with some guidance.

The following formatting issue is likely caused by an external factor (otherwise, we would see the same issue on my install and on other users’ sites as well). However, I want to replicate your exact setup on my site and run a test to confirm.

The email sent by Email Settings (Registration Complete) fills in the merge tags correctly, but does not format with line breaks. It shows up all as one big paragraph.

Can you please copy and paste the content of your Registration Complete email body here? I will configure the same text on my site and run a test to determine whether the formatting issue is coming from the site’s environment or from the plugin itself.

Note: Re-save the email content while no other plugins are active to ensure it is saved without any external formatting interference.

Below is a copy and paste from the site for the Registration Complete notice. I did find that I can get it to format using HTML tags, though the tags get wiped out if I toggle between Visual and Code tabs.

Thank you for requesting access to the AAI Member Directory. Your request is currently under review. If your company is currently an Agribusiness Association of Iowa member, you will receive an email when you account is made active.

If your company is not currently a member, visit the following URL to complete your membership:

Thank you. I copied and pasted the email text you provided and performed a test registration. The email formatting looks fine on my end. Here’s a screenshot showing what I received in the inbox:

If you are seeing all the text in one line then something on your site/server environment is affecting it. Your hosting provider might be able to help with that.

Thank you for checking that out. I’ll do some other inquiries to try to track down what is causing that. I appreciate you working through this with me.
