ParticipantI have inherited the partial management of a site that uses Simple Membership. Currently, there are 247 users in both the wordpress users table and the Simple Membership table. What is the relationship between the two? Are all members automatically also users or are they separate entities?

ModeratorHi, can you confirm if all the users in WordPress Users are the same Members as in Simple Membership Members?

ParticipantIt seems that they are the same, but I’m not the one who typically manages the members. When I looked a few weeks ago, the list sizes were different. The question is as much about the mechanics – does the plugin cross populate the “users” from the “members” and does the “users” list need to be the same or can the “users” list be relatively small (administrators/contributors) while still controlling access for the “members”? In our case, we have many members that would have access to some portions of the site, but a limited number of people who would actually provide content.
If we can maintain separate lists, on a related note, would the “members” authentication cross over to the Vanilla Forums user database that is using SSO authentication?January 4, 2017 at 10:40 pm #9480mbrsolution
ModeratorHi, when someone signs up to become a member the plugin automatically creates a user account in WordPress Users. After this, if you delete a user from WordPress users it will delete the member as well from simple Membership plugin.
If you have WordPress Users which do not exist in your Members list in Simple Membership plugin then you can use an addon to import the users into your members list.
In regards to your last question, can you provide more information.
Thank you

ParticipantThank you, your response renders the question regarding SSO moot. So Simple Membership is a layer that adds functionality to users, not a replacement for it, right? Perhaps no one else asks, but it would be nice if the documentation made that more clear.

ModeratorHi, can you further explain what you mean by the following question?

ParticipantI have spent HOURS trying to find a discussion on this very topic. I am managing a website for our garden club and occasionally someone who has previously set up a successful login, now is blocked. To try to fix this, I don’t know whether I need to edit WP Membership or Users or both. From this conversation, I am starting to learn that the Membership plugin feeds Users. Is that correct? Even though, Users allows for the generation of an electronic password and the Membership plugin allows for the entry of a password. Here’s my question: When a member is not able to login, what are the steps I need to take to fix this?

It “depends.” Is the membership status “Active” and is the password correct? And are they using the SWPM login form, or the WordPress login (with autologin to SWPM)?

ModeratorHi, apart from what The Assurer mentioned above you can also carry out the following troubleshooting steps.

ParticipantI did not build our website, I’m only updating it. I do not know anything about the SWPM vs WordPress login. All I know is that on the left menu under Dashboard there is both a “Users” selection and a “WP Membership” selection. From what I could find online, I believe that the login is generated from WP Membership and I believe it is the Simple Membership plugin. For those few who seem to have trouble with their login,I have offered a new password that I would enter internally in their WP Membership profile as well as their Users profile. I have tested this on my computer and am able to get in. Is this a valid procedure to help someone with their login problem?

There is nothing wrong with the way you are tackling login issues for your members. Just remember to remind your members to change the password after they log in. In some cases your method would be the only way to allow members to get back in, after they block themselves out. Also let your members know about the Forgot Password link in the login widget. This link helps the member create a new password if they forget their password.
Let us know if you need more information or help.
Kind regards
