InactiveCould anyone give me a code for my functions.php file that would sort my members alphabetically by default?
Thank you.

KeymasterWe don’t have any readymade code for that. By default the list is sorted using their ID (so you can easily see the new entries).
You can sort the members list by clicking on the column header. You can click on the username column header and that will sort all the members alphabetically (using their username).

InactiveThe problem with this is that it is so time-consuming. If I am on page one and I click username to sort, there is not a problem, but if I click on page 20 username to sort, it takes me back to page one.
The only way I can view page 20 sorted by username is to start at page one and view the next page, then the next page, then the next page. I am currently at over 1000 members and expect to grow considerably more quite quickly, as I have done in the past.
This is not a workable solution when you have to view page by page by page just to see them in alphabetical order.

ParticipantI reported something similar some months ago. When I enter a search term on the Members page, and there is more than one page of results, clicking on Next doesn’t take you to the second page. I now have over 10,000 people registered, and searching for someone with the a name such as Smith throws up 5 pages of results, yet I cannot then look at page 2 of the results: instead it shows page 2 of the whole membership.

ParticipantI third this. For any type of directory alphabetical ordering of the entries is a must, especially when people’s names are involved. At least the option to do so.

KeymasterI would like to inspect the behavior and investigate this more. Can you please give me a URL of the page where I can go and inspect the behavior?

Go to Members. You will see that Order By defaults to “Last Active”. I would like it to default to alphabetical.
Thank you.

KeymasterThe listing on that page doesn’t look anything like ours. Has that listing been customized on your site?
The following page now has usage instructions on how to sort the listing by name:

InactiveI am not using your addon. I’m wondering if it may just be a buddypress listing. I didn’t realize you had an addon until you sent me the link. I will buy it.
Thank you.

KeymasterKeep using what you are using (thats no issue). For buddypress listing, you will need to ask their support if they have the option you are looking for.

InactiveI’ve already purchased your addon. It looks like just what I need.
Thank you for your help. -
