ParticipantHi there,
I wonder if there is an issue with the latest update regarding PayPal payments? (Buy Now Button).
Here is the issue I am currently seeing.
Members pays for upgrade to paid account from free account via PayPal.
I get the email from PayPal confirming the payment has been completed.
The users account has not been updated.
When I check the payments tab in the dashboard the payment is not listed.
If I go and manually change a members account from free to paid, this is when the payment appears in the payments tab.
When I look in the debug file I can only see the PayPal payment information string appear in the debug log AFTER I have manually changed a users account from free to paid. Even though I have already had the payment confirmation email from PayPal.
There is either a delay with PayPal or something in the latest update that has broken something.
We have also noticed that this does not always happen, we had a user update their account yesterday and it worked automatically.
We have successfully been using this plugin for around two years now with little to no issues until recently, but something has changed.
What steps would you recommend that we take to try and resolve this?
Thank you in advance.

I forgot what the exact percentage is, but depending upon factors such as network traffic and PayPal’s processing load; there is a 30-ish percent chance that control will return to the site, before the IPN is sent and processed.
In the cases where processing is successful; are all of the expected debug messages posted?
And when there are issues, does it eventually resolve itself on its own, after a period of time? …like in a few minutes?

ParticipantHi,
Thank you for the reply.
Just had one just now where I received the PayPal email but did not update straight away. It took just over ten minutes for the members profile to update and for the payment to appear in the payment history tab.
For the past few, I have done the update to the member profile myself. So this is the first time I’ve seen it update automatically after the delay without myself interfering with the process.
When I check the debug log, I see the PayPal transaction but the time is not the same as the PayPal email timestamp.
So are you saying that this is a load issue on PayPal’s end? I haven’t noticed it before as it was highlighted to me via a user who reported their account hadn’t updated.
A quick google search shows that sometimes PayPal’s IPN system can be affected but is not always reflected in their status updates.
I will continue to monitor it.
Thanks,
Pete

ModeratorThat is why we include emails with registration; because the issue also affects effective use of the “Thank You page.”
Out of curiosity, where is the server itself hosted, and where are your members from?

ParticipantThe server where my my site is hosted? The UK and customers from around the world.
The IPN IP address are going to PayPal as expected.
Today I had an error listed in the debug log after someone completed payment.
[2024/05/08 12:12:51] – SUCCESS: Checking if PayPal IPN response is valid
[2024/05/08 12:12:51] – SUCCESS: Connecting to: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr
[2024/05/08 12:13:01] – FAILURE: IPN validation failed.
[2024/05/08 12:13:01] – FAILURE: Error response: cURL error 28: Connection timed out after 10000 milliseconds
[2024/05/08 12:13:01] – SUCCESS: Paypal class finished. This is the first time the error has appeared.
This the first time this has happened. PayPal having the issue I would assume?

ModeratorHmmm, it took more than 10 seconds, before erroring out. Do you have any idea where in the world that transaction came from? Remember, in March, the Rubymar cut a major internet cable as it was sinking into the Red Sea. That particular cable carried most of the Internet traffic between Europe and Asia.

ParticipantHi there,
I am still having issues with this. We did stop using the automatic account updates after payment received as it was patchy. We started to accept payments again to see if the issues had been resolved, but sadly we are still having issues.
When we look at the IPN history on PayPal account we are seeing error 503 when PayPal is trying to communicate with the script / server?
Would this be an issue with our site, maybe a plugin conflict or something else?
We did try to put the IPN URL into the browser to see if we had the same 503 error but it appears to work and is showning in the debug log.
We are tempted to pay for the support which you offer to get this resolved as it’s time consuming for us to manually update member profiles after payment has been recived. Pus, we are not confident in doing something we do not know about due to the risk of doing something wrong.
Thanks,
Pete

Usually the issue is a server security module or WP plugin, that prevents external access to URL in the WP plugin directory.
Who is your hosting provider? Ask your hosting provider if there is any server module or plugin that is preventing the IPN from directly accessing that particular URL.

ParticipantThank you, I’ve contacted my hosting providers. I will update when I hear anything back.
