I’m looking at creating a website for sharing pictures and videos with family and friends. Don’t want to upload my pictures and videos to facesuck or any of the other ‘social’ media platforms as I’m not data to be sold to any company that pays Mark Z et al. I know that WordPress has the configuration setting to tell search engines to ignore the site but it also has the warning that not all search engines honor that config setting. Will the Simple Membership plugin prevent search engines from accessing pages that are access restricted by the plugin?
SWPM is a tool, capable of doing many things; such as limiting content access to a limited set of members, when properly configured. With that said; please carefully read the documentation, to determine if the plugin is right for you:

And because SWPM is open source code; we cannot make guarantees about the suitability of SWPM for any particular purpose.
As for search engine scraping of your site; it comes down to the proper configuration of your site, and it is your responsibility to ensure the site is properly configured. You might consider hiring someone to audit or ensure the site performs as you expect it to.
Regarding social platforms such as FB; outside of big data conspiracy theories, it comes down to how you set individual settings, which of course are your personal responsibility to configure.
If you have a more specific question about anything in the documentation, please feel free to inquire.
