Most users of my site complete the registration process successfully, but a minority get an error message saying ‘Activation code mismatch’ when they click the link in the activation email. What could cause this?
Do you have the debug logs turned on? What email clients are they using? And are their browsers accepting cookies? Also, can you corrolate the problems to a particular country?
I have turned on debug logging now. My members are staff and students in several UK universities, using their university email addresses. There is no obvious pattern (eg. one university more likely to have this error than another). I will keep a watch on this.
One possibility is the university firewall(s). If incoming email is scanned for malicious links; and the firewall probes the link; it becomes no-good, because SWPM “thinks” the link was already already clicked.
That did occur to me, but wouldn’t that affect all of the registrations from that university, rather than a minority of them?
Until enough debug data is collected; we can only guess.
