Simple Membership Plugin › Forums › Simple Membership Plugin › What happens when a members card expires and renewal fails using Stripe?
Hi
I have searched the forum and find similar queries, but not a definitive answer so apologies if this has been raised before.
We are using Stripe SCA buttons to create a yearly membership. So long as peoples card remain active then I understand the recurring subscription will simply charge them again next year.
But what happens when someone’s card expires?
There is no where for them to login and change their card, quite rightly in the website, but as they don’t create a Stripe account during membership sign-up, there is also nowhere on Stripe they can login.
I can’t see an email notification in Simple Membership that advises them of the failed renewal, so how would a member be advised their renewal has failed and how would they then update their card information to re-try the payment?
Many thanks for any advice
Richard

If a member does not have a Stripe account, the “short answer” is that a cancellation IPN is sent to your site the next recurring payment cycle, and SWPM places the account into an “expired” state. You can then use “Auto Downgrade an Expired Member’s Account” to downgrade an expired member’s account to a free membership level, that would use “After Login Redirection for Members” to send them to a membership renewal page.

Thank you for this, much appreciated.
