I’ve tried a forum search, but nothing seems to come up relating to this, so I apologise if this has been addressed already.

Mostly, the membership plugin seems to be working really well. However, when a user changes their password, the email that they are sent is not the customised one that we have set up in the “email settings”. Also, it is coming from “WordPress” rather than our personalised/ site email address.

The email settings are otherwise working fine – e.g. when someone signs up for membership, they receive the email we expect them to, and it comes from our own “name” and email address.

Any suggestions as to why the password change email isn’t behaving as expected?

    Hi,

However, when a user changes their password, the email that they are sent is not the customised one that we have set up in the “email settings”. Also, it is coming from “WordPress” rather than our personalised/ site email address.

Are they changing the password via our plugin or via WordPress?

    Kind regards

    Thanks for the qucik response.

Are they changing the password via our plugin or via WordPress?

As far as I am aware they are changing the password via the plug-in. If they forget their password, they definitely go through the plugin to get a new password sent out to them and the correct email is sent, with the correct name etc. However if they are logged in and go to their account profile and elect to change their password there (e.g. immediately after logging in for the first time, when they would be using the randomised password generated for them at sign-up), it is this email that comes from WordPress, and they receive the default WordPress email rather than our customised one.

The profile page has the shortcode [swpm_profile_form] on it, so I have to assume that when they change the password there, it is (or should be) through Simple Membership that they are changing their password.

Oh and to clarify, the Password reset page just has the short-code [swpm_reset_form] on it – so again, I have no reason to believe that there’s any obvious reason why the WordPress password reset is over-riding the membership plugin one.

If there’s any additional information that would help you to identify what’s happening, do just let me know.

    Thank you.

@LMiles — for the “From Email Address” setting, do you have an entry like:
    Your Name <adin@example.com>

Yes the from email address is set up as our own main address, which is why all the other emails are going out correctly. It’s only the reset password email that has this problem.

Just wondering if you have any further thoughts about this issue? For some of our members, because the email comes from “WordPress” it is automatically going into their junk mail folders, or they are ignoring or deleting it as they are not expecting it.

Hi, check the following forum post. Let me know if this issue is similar to yours.

    Kind regards

Hi, thank you – yes it does sound like a very similar issue. I had already tried the “manage notification emails” plug-in, but that simply disabled the “changed password” email from being sent out (i.e. it switched off the WordPress email, but the simple membership email did not get sent either). I will try the second plug-in (the bnfw one) now and will let you know if it solves the issue – fingers crossed!

    Many thanks. Will report back.

Unfortunately it looks like this is a particularly awkward issue – the plugin, when you select “password reset to user” (which is the email we want to sort out) does not have the “Set “From” Name & Email, Reply To, CC, BCC” option available. In fact, where this option would usually be available to select, instead it says:

This notification doesn’t support additional email fields due to a limitation in WordPress.

Any other suggestions or information would be welcome. It looks like this would be something that every site using the Simple Membership plugin (and other similar plugins) must have happening, but maybe not too many others have noticed, as *all* of the other emails work perfectly.

That is the normal behavior in WordPress. It makes perfect sense that only the person resetting their password would receive an e-mail to allow them to reset their password. That is why the plugin I suggested in the forum post link that I shared above does not manipulate or add extra fields. I believe it only allows you to customize the message sent.

The only action I can suggest is to Google it. Maybe someone has shared a function or snippet to manipulate this code.

    Kind regards.

It makes perfect sense that only the person resetting their password would receive an e-mail to allow them to reset their password.

There seems to be a misunderstanding about what we’re trying to do. I agree that it makes sense that only the person resetting their password would *receive* such an email. We don’t want to change or modify who *receives* the email. We want to change who the email is sent *from*. In other words, we want the person to receive their email from our admin address (to be seen to come from our website, just as all the other emails do) not from “WordPress”.

The simple membership plug-in allows us to create a customised email, in email settings, specifically to be sent to a member if they choose to change their password. The fact that this facility is part of the plugin makes it clear that the intention of your plug-in is that when someone resets their password, they should receive the customised email. But this never happens. Instead of the customised Simple Membership email, the standard WordPress password reset email, from “wordpress” is sent to them – and as a result is either ignored or goes to spam, because they are expecting an email from *us* not from “wordpress”.

It’s the fact that this is set up in your plug in specifically for us to customise that makes it puzzling that it doesn’t happen.
